Toxic at Unity Theatre

Toxic: RAWD REVIEWS

WRITTEN BY KEZIAH

My name is Keziah, welcome to RAWD Reviews! I am writing this review because I love write, see theatre and share my creativity.

On the 27th of March I went to the unity theatre to see Toxic.

Before seeing the show I didn't know what to expect, but I was excited to see something new, the show starred Josh-Susan Enright and Nathaniel Hall. Toxic had a cool stage set with two microphones set and both sides of the stage, a house with a smashed window and two blocks that were used for different things like a couch, a toilet, and even used for a restaurant setting.

The show covered dark topics such as Aids, abuse and racism, so it was nice at the beginning we were told it was okay to leave if needed, I also liked how they audio described them.

Toxic tells the story of two boys who met on the dating apps, one looking for a hookup and the other looking for love, throughout the story they end up falling in love, however things end up taking a dark turn and the relationship starts to become toxic.

Josh-Susan Enright did a great job with the part he played, he was a great actor, and portrayed his character extremely well, he was really convincing with his breakdowns and showed his vulnerable side really well. He had me gripped from the beginning to the end.

Another great thing was the costumes fit each scene, for example they went to a Britney concert and they used costumes such as toxic and hit me baby one more time which was pretty iconic.

The music throughout the show was mostly Britney which fit the scenes well.

I really enjoyed the way the use of time moving was shown, as they would change the outfits they were wearing with different time periods and sometimes they would walk around the back of the stage, I thought it was a really cool concept.

Personally I didn't enjoy the sex scenes as it made me a little uncomfortable but that is probably because I'm not used to seeing it.

The venue was very accessible as it had a sensory table where you could get ear defenders and there was a ramp and lift for wheelchair access and also a wheelchair space.

I really enjoyed the show and thought the topics were important as it shows us we don't have to stay in a toxic relationship.

I would give this show a five out of five!

CREATIVE CORNER:

This is a place for Keziah to share any of her creative ideas that are inspired by the show!

Watching Toxic made me realise how badly the system is for mental health as both characters struggled with it, and they didn't wanna get help as all that would happen was they would get given pills.

This is a topic I relate to as I struggle with my mental health and it is so hard to get the right help.

It also made me realise how hard it is to be gay as you are told you are not fem enough, not gay enough, and other people will judge you.

I think the system is messed up and we need to change how we treat people.

The world needs to become more kind and more understanding, and this show portrayed that.

The show also made me realise that being in a toxic relationship is hard to break out of as you can't switch off feelings, but you don't have to stay in one you can leave even though it is hard.

If the system changed things would be easier, there needs to be more support for people who are struggling in toxic relationships and struggling with mental health.
