‘I felt chills, she really made the audience feel the message of the song.’

My name is Keziah, welcome to RAWD Reviews! I am writing this review because I love write, see theatre and share my creativity.

On the 16th of July I went to Manchester Palace Theatre to see one of my favourite musicals: Hairspray. This production was starring Neil Hurst as Edna Turnblad, Gina Murray as Velma Von Tussle, Michael Ndegwa as Motormouth Maybelle, Alexandra Emmerson- Kirby as Tracy Turnblad, Dermot Canavan as Wilbur, Solomon Davy as Link Larkin, Katlo as Little Inez, Declan Egan as Corny Collins, Allana Taylor as Amber Von Tussle , Freya McMahon as Penny Pingleton, and Reece Richards as Seaweed.

Hairspray is about teenager Tracy Turnblad who pursues stardom as a dancer on a local television dance show and rallies against racial segregation. The show deals with Racism and judging people based only on weight and appearances.

The set of Hairspray is visually striking and immersive. The vibrant colors and detailed props transport the audience to 1960s Baltimore. Set pieces like Tracy's bedroom, the local radio station, and the "Corny Collins Show" stage create distinct and memorable locations. The lights are also used a lot to see a fun but also meaningful experience.

The characters in Hairspray are well-developed and most of them are very likeable. Two of my favorite characters are Penny and Seaweed. I loved their chemistry in this show, they have a really cute romance and they were both amazing. The actress who played Penny had amazing facial expressions and was so fun to watch. Seaweed had such a amazing voice and was a great dancer!

I also thought the actress who played Motormouth had a amazing vocal range and when she sang, "I know where I've been." I felt chills, she really made the audience feel the message of the song.

The whole show has a powerful message and it is very powerful, it always makes me feel good after watching it, it’s a really moving, fun and lovable show. The songs are so fun and the storyline is beautiful.

I would give this show a five out of five, I definitely recommend it!

CREATIVE CORNER:

This is a place for Keziah to share any of her creative ideas that are inspired by the show!

use your voice:

Everyone should stand up for what's right now matter what, everyone who is lucky enough to have a voice should use it for good!

To make the world a better place we all need to come together and fight for what's right, we need to fight against racism, homophobia, discrimination and bullying but we should do it peacefully. We don't need to use violence to solve everything.

I've noticed that a lot of people like to solve problems with violence, but one thing Hairspray taught me is that we can protest peacefully so let's speak up for what's right and never give up!.
